List of yoga schools

Yoga, rather than being the name for a singular lineage or even a specific practice, is a bracket term that covers a number of methodologies, each with a number of schools. Within the major branches of yoga there are as four classical traditions known as Jnaan Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Raaj Yoga. Later on some more traditions have developed such as Haṭha, Lāya, Mantra and Kundalini. Later traditions are told to help one reach the earlier traditions. There are many different schools and lineages, both extant and defunct. Since the late 19th century, a great number of distinct new styles of " Hatha Yoga" have been introduced by individual teachers called Iyengar Yoga, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Power Yoga, Artistic Yoga etc. In India there are many yoga schools all over the country including Rishikesh, Goa, Dharmshala, Bangalore etc. Rishikesh is famously called 'The Yoga Capital of the World'. More than three hundred Yoga centers are located only in Rishieksh.

The term "Yoga" has been used for various philosophies and concepts in the context of Hindu revivalism and Neo-Hindu religious and philosophical movements.

These are partially derived from concepts of Hatha yoga.

With the widespread reception of the concept of "Yoga" in the west, the term has also been transferred to similar systems of meditation and exercise which are not of Indian origin.
