Housing in Europe


In 2007, 72.5% of tenants paid rent at market rates, 27.5% paid rent at reduced rates. More than 50% of EU households owned their homes, with the highest rates of home ownership found in Romania (96%), Lithuania and Slovakia (both 89%) and Hungary (87%). The lowest percentages of home ownership were in Switzerland (37%), Germany (46%) and Austria (52%). In 2009, 73.5% of the EU-27 population owned their homes, and 36.9% of the owners had a mortgage or a housing loan. That same year, 41.7% of the EU population lived in flats, 34.3% in detached houses and 23.0% in semi-detached houses.
