Bharat mata ki jai

Bharat maata ki jai is an Indian traditional chant expressing the utmost reverence to the Mother land as India. Many Hindu fundamentalist compelled all citizens of India mandatory to say the chant (bharat maata ki jai) or leave India and settle down in Pakistan permanently. Baba Ramdev emphasized "If someone says that he won't chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai even if his head is chopped off, I want to say there is a rule of law and we respect the Constitution, otherwise we can cut hundreds and thousands of heads," Ramdev told the media.

AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi violently declined to say Bharat maata ki jai if at all a knife is put on his throat. I won't utter that (slogan) even if you put a knife to my throat," Owaisi said, amid loud applause from the crowd. "Nowhere in the Constitution it says that one should say 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'," Owaisi said. On March 3, Bhagwat had said the new generation needs to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India, comments which came against the backdrop of the row over alleged anti-India sloganeering on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus.

The controversy arose when RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat said, now the time has come to say Bharat mata ki jai, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday said the new generation needs to be taught to chant slogans hailing mother India, comments that come against the backdrop of a raging row over alleged anti-India sloganeering on the JNU campus. “Now the time has come when we have to tell the new generation to chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ (hail mother India). It should be real, spontaneous and part of all-round development of the youth,” he said.

Many Muslim organizations issued fatwa that saying bharat mata ki jai is unislamic. Deoband, the leading Islamic seminary of the Indian subcontinent, said Muslims love “Bharat Mata” (Mother India) but they can not worship their “maadre-watan (mother land)”.

In a fatwa issued to Muslims, the seminary said Muslims should not chant “Bharat Mata ki jai” because it is against Islam and “tauheed” (the idea of worshiping one God), which forms the core of Islam.
