List of Mount Everest death statistics

List of Mount Everest death statistics is a list of statistics about death on Mount Everest. For a list of mountaineering deaths on Mount Everest, see List of people who died climbing Mount Everest

Examples of known cases

See also Dr. Beck Weathers, who is famous for narrowly surviving the 1996 Everest Disaster.

Examples of those who, after summiting, died on the descent down or soon after (not counting other climbs, on the same expedition but does not have to be their first summit)

examples only

There is some generalizations to be made about summiting and one is that the early period was involved large "siege" style expeditions funded by large organizations, these helped overcome the remote nature and many unknowns of Everest (either both from Tibet or Nepal) This gave way to lightweight style expeditions, personified by Messner's solo summiting around 1980. After this was the rise of commercial expeditions, which range from logistics only (a permit and some basic base camp supplies), to expensive guided expeditions.

Another very deadly event was in 1995, when 42 perished near Everest in a large avalanche.

A 2013 article in National Geographic noted 19,121 people above a base camp and 6,206 Everest summits up to the year 2012. An example of statistics is that first German woman to summit mount Everest and survive, was Helga Hengge in 1999. However, the first German (from West Germany) to make it to the summit was Hannelore Schmatz but she died on descent, getting down to about 8300 meters altitude. Fatalities may include people who died on Mount Everest that were not trying to summit (such as Everest Base Camp trekkers), or may have been climbing something else on the Everest massif such as Lhotse.

One of the extraordinary people claimed by Everest mountaineering was the U.S. astronaut Karl Gordon Henize. He was on a mission to study radiation but came down with a fatal case of HAPE in October 1993 and died at north base camp. At the time he was the oldest astronaut to have flown in space and also had a doctorate in astronomy. He died on October 5, 1993 and was buried on Mount Everest.
