Language Grid

Language Grid is a multilingual service platform on the Internet, developed by Language Grid Project, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. It enables easy registration and sharing of language resources such as online dictionaries, bilingual corpora, and machine translations. The development of the Language Grid was started in April 2006, led by Professor Toru Ishida, Department of Social Informatics of Kyoto University.

The Language Grid is developed to increase the accessibility and usability of language resources. It takes the service-oriented approach by wrapping existing language resources as atomic Web services and enables users to compose new services by combining atomic Web services.

The Language Grid consists of four service layers: P2P Grid Layer, Atomic Service Layer, Composite Service Layer and Application System Layer.

Language Grid related software includes the Service Grid Server Software, Language Services, and Language Grid Toolbox. The development of Language Grid related software is managed by the open source software project from April 2010.

The Department of Social Informatics of Kyoto University started single operation of the Language Grid in December 2007 for non-profit purpose and research purpose, which is named as Language Grid Kyoto Operation Center. As of March 2011, 140 groups in 18 countries and regions had joined the Kyoto Language Grid. As of March 2011, 104 services are registered in the Kyoto Language Grid.

In January 2011, the second operation center for Language Grid was started by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center of Thailand, which is called Language Grid Bangkok Operation Center.

In February 2011, the Department of Social Informatics of Kyoto University started the federated operation of the Language Grid with the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center, which enables sharing of language services among multiple Language Grids. Users in either Language Grid can use the language services in both Language Grids.
