Henry Jackson Thomas, Jr. (born September 9, 1971) is an American actor and musician. He is best known for his role as Elliott in Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), for which he received BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award and Saturn Award nominations. He also starred in other films, including Raggedy Man (1981), Cloak & Dagger (1984), Misunderstood (1984), Fire in the Sky (1993), Legends of the Fall (1994), Suicide Kings (1997), All the Pretty Horses (2000), Gangs of New York (2002), 11:14 (2003), Dear John (2010) and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016).

Thomas was born an only child in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Carolyn L. (née Davis), a homemaker, and Henry Jackson Thomas, a hydraulic machinist. He attended East Central High School in San Antonio and Blinn College in Brenham.

Thomas made his film debut in Raggedy Man, which starred Sissy Spacek and Eric Roberts. At age nine, Thomas auditioned for the lead role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. He won the part by giving a genuinely tearful performance, during which he drew upon his real-life trauma of having seen his pet dog being killed by a neighbor’s dog. The film’s success exceeded expectations, and Thomas was troubled by the sometimes extreme reaction of the public.
