Finger-tutting

Finger-tutting
Genre Street dance
Year 2010s
Origin United States

Finger-tutting is a type of dance that involves intricate movements of the fingers. The word "tutting" is a street dance style based on angular movements which are supposed to stylize the poses seen on reliefs in the art of ancient Egypt, and refers to "King Tut".

Finger-tutting received international attention after dancer/choreographer Julian Daniels (aka JayFunk) performed in a viral Samsung commercial entitled "Unleash Your Fingers". Later, the dance group, Finger Circus, pushed the art-form worldwide through commercials,YouTube videos, and community-building.

Finger tutting received further international attention after practitioner John Hunt (aka Pnut) made a viral video entitled "Greasy Fingers". Later, Hunt was featured prominently in the video for the Taylor Swift song Shake It Off.

More recently, Finger-tutting has been featured in the Syfy show The Magicians as one of the ways in which its characters can conjure various spells.

Finger-tutting is still popular outside of the entertainment industry. The flexibility and mobility of one's fingers give this dance style incredible variation and make each dancer's style unique. The style continues to expand and develop with each new practitioner.
