European Corporate Governance Institute

The European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI) is an international scientific non-profit association. It provides a forum for debate and dialogue between academics, legislators and practitioners, focusing on major corporate governance issues and thereby promotes best practice.

Its primary role is to undertake, commission and disseminate research on corporate governance. Based upon impartial and objective research and the collective knowledge and wisdom of its members, it advises on the formulation of corporate governance policy and the development of best practice and undertakes any other activity that improves the understanding and exercise of corporate governance.

It was founded in 2002. Among its 24 founding members are Paul L. Davies, David Webb, Bengt R. Holmström and Richard Portes. It is headed by a Board of Directors, currently chaired by David Devlin, the majority of whom are drawn from academia in order to ensure the Institute's academic independence. Other directors have strong ties with the private sector and governments. It has close links with other organisations that are active in the field, for example the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) and the Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF).
