Andy Murray was the defending champion, but he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals.

Novak Djokovic won the final, defeating Roger Federer in five sets to claim his second Wimbledon title, and his seventh grand slam title. It was also his first win at a major since the 2013 Australian Open.

19-year-old Nick Kyrgios became the first player to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon on debut since Florian Mayer in 2004. Kyrgios also become the lowest ranked player to defeat the World No. 1 at a grand slam since 1992, when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. The 2014 edition of Wimbledon saw the first Grand Slam final since the 2009 US Open to feature neither Murray nor Nadal.

Although Nadal was world number one entering the tournament, the Spaniard was seeded second behind Novak Djokovic due to his recent poor performances on grass. After claiming the title, Djokovic replaced Nadal as the World No.1, holding the top position for the first time since October 2013.
